Vale Stan Ansell

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Stan Ansell, a much-loved and respected member of the Blackburn Bowls Club, whose dedication to the sport and to his fellow members spanned decades.

Stan’s journey with Blackburn began on April 1, 1994 – a date he always enjoyed pointing out was April Fool’s Day – after moving from Bendigo to Blackburn in late 1993. It was a knock at the door at 7pm by Ken Marshall that convinced Stan to join Blackburn. Arriving with impressive credentials as a qualified coach, umpire, and Division 1 bowler, Stan quickly became an integral part of the club’s fabric.

When he joined, the bowls world was divided into two autonomous organisations – the RVBA for men and the VLGBA for women – with separate committees and responsibilities. Stan often recalled how, despite the structure, the two sections worked harmoniously, with the ladies managing catering (including the much-loved afternoon teas on pennant days) and the men taking on cleaning duties. Social events were plentiful, and Stan thrived in the strong community atmosphere.

In 2009, following the merger into Bowls Victoria, Stan embraced the new era of unified administration, serving with distinction on the Bowls Committee and Board of Directors. His record of service speaks for itself:

  • Board Member – 2 years
  • Coach & Umpire – 25 years
  • Bowls Secretary – 14 years
  • Committee Member – 16 years
  • Constitution Subcommittee – 1 year

On the green, Stan’s skill and competitive spirit shone through. His achievements included:

  • Member of the Interstate RSL Bowls Team – Adelaide, 1986
  • State Triples – Equal 3rd, 2005
  • State Over 60 Pairs – Runner-up, 2007
  • Metropolitan Pennant Division 8 Winners
  • Metropolitan Pennant Division 2 Runners-up
  • Numerous successes in group Pairs, Triples, and Fours events
  • Blackburn Club Pairs Champion – 2005

More than his titles and positions, Stan will be remembered for his tireless commitment, steady leadership, and the warmth he brought to every interaction. His presence at Blackburn Bowls Club was a constant.

Stan leaves behind a legacy not only of sporting excellence but of community spirit, service, and friendship. His contribution to Blackburn Bowls Club will be felt for many years to come, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
